Evidence-Based Early Childhood Practices

"Evidence-Based Foundations of Our Work"

The Children’s Advocate framework is rooted in early childhood developmental science and trauma-informed care. Our practices integrate the following evidence-based models: Whole-Child Approach (ASCD), Attachment Theory (Bowlby), Ecological Systems Theory (Bronfenbrenner), and the Protective Factors Framework (CSSP), among others.

1. The Whole-Child Approach (ASCD, NAEYC)

Core idea: Learning and development are integrated—social, emotional, physical, and cognitive growth must all be supported.

2. Ecological Systems Theory (Bronfenbrenner, 1979)

Core idea: A child’s development is influenced by multiple environments (family, school, community, legal systems).

3. Attachment Theory (Bowlby, Ainsworth)

Core idea: Secure attachments form the foundation of emotional regulation, trust, and social competence.

4. Trauma-Informed Care Framework (SAMHSA, NCTSN)

Core idea: Recognizes and responds to the effects of trauma on children and families, emphasizing safety, trustworthiness, collaboration, empowerment, and cultural humility.

5. Positive Behavior Support (PBS) & Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

Core idea: Children’s emotional regulation and behavior improve through proactive, consistent, and supportive interventions.

6. Family Systems Theory (Minuchin, Bowen)

Core idea: A family functions as an interconnected emotional unit; changes in one member affect all others.

7. Reflective Practice & Professional Learning Communities (Zero to Three, NAEYC)

Core idea: Professionals continuously reflect on interactions and decisions to improve practice.

8. Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP)

Core idea: Teaching and caregiving must align with a child’s developmental stage, individual differences, and sociocultural context.

9. Collaborative Problem Solving (Dr. Ross Greene)

Core idea: Children do well if they can—challenging behaviors arise from lagging skills, not lack of motivation.

10. Protective Factors Framework (Center for the Study of Social Policy)

Core idea: Strengthening families by building protective factors reduces child maltreatment and promotes resilience.

  • Five protective factors: Parental resilience, social connections, knowledge of parenting and child development, concrete support in times of need, and children’s social-emotional competence.
